Eastern Cape favoured for second home

The Eastern Cape province of South Africa is a favourite for investors in second properties. According to the First National Bank Property Barometer, at 15 per cent, the province has the highest percentage for second property investment in the buy-to-let market. This is followed closely by the Western Cape (14 per cent) and the non-Gauteng/Coastal areas.

The Eastern Cape took six per cent of sales for second property but as a holiday home retreat. However the inland property sales faired better than the interest-rate sensitive coastal areas. About 88 per cent of total buying in Gauteng is primary residential buying, while the coastal areas averaged 72 per cent for this.

The property levels in the third quarter were the highest in Gauteng (Pretoria and surrounds), Gauteng (Johannesburg and surrounds), the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal. FNB property strategist John Loos says the property performance in the coastal regions will underperform the Gauteng market for so long as the interest rate situation continues.
